"There is nothing more tragic than to sleep through a revolution […] The wind of change is blowing, and we see in our day and our age a significant development […] The great challenge facing every individual graduating today is to remain awake through this social revolution."

Martin Luther King Jr, "Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution,June 14, 1965

Misinformation is at an an all time high. The use of technology and social media has made spreading inaccurate information spread like wildfire, regardless of the intent to deceive. This era of misinformation has proved to be a threat to our society. It's become one of the most common causes of division between groups of people. To avoid and break the cycle of misinformation, we've got to slow down and start thinking critically for ourselves. WOKE's mission is to provide fact-checked, accurate information/reports of events, issues, and everything else going on in the world that you should know about.

on the brain

BIAS

The amygdala is where the information is processed; however other parts of the brain are involved in the pervasion of implicit bias.

Implicit, or unconscious bias, as defined above, is a subtle cognitive process that starts in the amygdala.

Dr. Brainard (MS, MA, PhD), of the Brainard Strategy, highlights the parts of the brain that create bias:

  • Amygdala

  • Hippocampus

  • Temporal lobe

  • Media frontal cortex

biases appear to be hardwired and inalterable

countering cognitive bias doesn't deal with the problematic thoughts, judgments, or predictions themselves

Instead, the brain focuses on changing behavior, in the form of incentives or “nudges.”

what is

BIAS?

Bias is a disproportionate weight in favor of or against an idea or thing, usually in a way that is closed-minded, prejudicial, or unfair. Biases can be innate or learned. People may develop biases for or against an individual, a group, or a belief.

About

WOKE is a youth led organization dedicated to providing fact-based information to our audience. The original goal we had in mind was to create a source of unbias media. However, after much consideration we came to find that there really is no such thing as “unbias” in today’s social climate. Personal beliefs of the writer, editor, and even the audience all play a part in the bias that is created. Because of this, WOKE will focus instead on giving the people enough information to form their own conclusions. We also aim to provide reliable and safe resources for all.
